Intelligence method

Deciding what deserves to be believed.

Fragmented, contested and stale information is the normal condition of a consequential commercial decision. Credible sources routinely disagree. This page sets out how the firm ranks them, tests them against each other, discloses their interests, grades what it concludes and states what it could not establish. Intelligence informs human commercial judgement; it does not automate the recommendation.

The method

  1. 01Source hierarchy
  2. 02Independent corroboration
  3. 03Contradiction handling
  4. 04Confidence grading
  5. 05Worked example
  6. 06Authority boundary
01Source hierarchy

Not all sources carry the same weight, and rank is not truth

Rank describes the standing a class of source holds before corroboration. A lower-ranked source that stands closer to the fact can displace a higher-ranked one — but the displacement is recorded with its reason, not performed silently.

01

Primary instrument

Executed contracts, licences, permits, filed statutory records, board minutes, signed representations.

Standing

Highest standing for what it actually says. Establishes that an instrument exists and what it obliges.

Characteristic failure

Existence is mistaken for performance. An instrument proves an obligation, not that anyone is meeting it.

02

Independent observation

Direct inspection, site and facility observation, physical verification of assets, operations witnessed rather than described.

Standing

High standing for current condition, and the only class that reliably tests whether documents describe reality.

Characteristic failure

A single observation is treated as a steady state. Observation is dated the moment it is taken.

03

Independent third-party record

Regulator or authority records, counterparty-adjacent operators, lenders, insurers, auditors, customs and logistics records.

Standing

Strong corroboration where the source has no stake in the decision and its own reason to be accurate.

Characteristic failure

Assumed independence. A source that is paid, appointed or introduced by the subject is not third-party.

04

Attributed representation

Named management statements, interviews with identified individuals, written answers to a clarification request.

Standing

Usable because it is attributable and can be tested against instruments and observation.

Characteristic failure

Fluency is read as reliability. A confident, consistent account is not a corroborated one.

05

Unattributed or secondary material

Market commentary, press, sector reports, informal introductions, aggregated databases of uncertain derivation.

Standing

Directional only. May guide where to look; may not carry a conclusion on its own.

Characteristic failure

Circular sourcing. Several outlets repeating one original claim reads as many sources and is one.

02Corroboration

Rules applied before anything is treated as established

Corroboration is the point at which most commercial diligence quietly fails. Sources are counted rather than tested, and a single origin reappears as apparent consensus.

01

Independence before count

Two sources corroborate only if they could have been wrong separately. Where both derive from the same origin — the same filing, the same adviser, the same introduction — they count once, and the shared origin is recorded.

02

Proximity to the fact

Weight follows how close a source stands to the thing asserted. A party that handled the cargo, issued the permit or advanced the funds outranks a party that summarised it later.

03

Interested-party disclosure

Every source is recorded with its interest in the outcome: none known, commercial interest, introduced by the subject, remunerated, or undisclosed. An interested source is not discarded; it is weighted and labelled so a reader can discount it themselves.

04

Freshness against volatility

Each fact carries an as-at date and a volatility assessment. A licence status, an approval pathway or a payment constraint can lapse faster than a corporate structure. Stale evidence is marked stale rather than quietly reused.

05

Absence is recorded, not inferred

Where a document, permission or record cannot be located, the record says so and states what was sought and where. Absence of evidence is never converted into evidence of absence, and never into reassurance.

06

The contradiction survives the summary

An unresolved conflict cannot be dropped when findings are condensed for an executive audience. If it is material, it appears in the summary the decision-maker actually reads.

03Contradiction handling

Every conflict is dispositioned, and two of the five dispositions issue no conclusion

01
Resolved on evidence
A further primary instrument or independent observation settles which account is correct. — The finding is graded, the displaced source is retained in the record with the reason it was displaced.
02
Resolved as definitional
The sources are measuring different things — different period, boundary, unit or entity — and both are accurate within their own frame. — The definition is fixed for the mandate, and every downstream figure is restated against it.
03
Unresolved, material
The conflict cannot be settled on available evidence and it changes the decision if either account is true. — No conclusion is issued on that point. It becomes a decision condition or a stated limitation on the recommendation.
04
Unresolved, immaterial
The conflict cannot be settled but neither account alters the decision. — Recorded and closed, with the materiality reasoning stated so a later reader can re-test it.
05
Escalated
The conflict suggests a misrepresentation, an undisclosed interest, or a matter outside commercial competence. — Raised to the client sponsor in writing with the underlying evidence. Legal, forensic or regulatory questions are referred, not absorbed.

A contradiction is closed by disposition, never by omission. Where it is material and unresolved, it travels into the executive summary intact.

04Confidence grading

Each finding leaves the firm with a grade attached

A grade states what a finding may be used for. It is a commercial judgement at a stated date, not a rating or an assurance opinion.

Confidence grades, their evidential requirement and permitted use
GradeNameEvidential requirementPermitted use
AEstablishedPrimary instrument or direct observation, corroborated by at least one genuinely independent source, current at a stated date.May be relied upon as a basis for commitment, subject to its as-at date.
BCorroboratedTwo or more independent sources agree, but no primary instrument or direct observation is available.May support a decision where the decision also carries a verification condition.
CIndicativeSingle credible source, uncontradicted, not independently corroborated.May shape sequencing and further enquiry. May not carry a commitment on its own.
DContestedCredible sources conflict and the conflict is not yet resolved.Carries no conclusion. Appears as an open contradiction in the decision record.
UUnknownSought and not obtained, or not yet examined. The gap and the attempt are both recorded.May not be filled by assumption. Where it is decision-critical, it becomes a condition or a stop.

Grades correspond to the evidence classes set out in the Evidence Standard, which governs what the firm will assert, infer, qualify or leave unknown.

05Worked example

SYNTHETIC ILLUSTRATION — not a client, not a mandate, not a case study

Three credible sources, one question, no agreement

A prospective operating partner, Calder Terminals Limited, presents as the delivery counterparty for a cross-border distribution commitment. Three sources address the same question. All three are credible. They do not agree.

The question

Can the counterparty handle the contracted volume through its own terminal from the first quarter of operation?

The three sources

S1

Counterparty management pack

Attributed representation

Interest: Interested — the subject of the assessment

What it says

States current handling capability comfortably above the contracted volume, supported by an internal operations summary and a named operations director.

Standing

Attributable and testable. Internally consistent and professionally prepared, which is not the same as corroborated.

S2

Filed statutory accounts and a lender's facility summary

Primary instrument

Interest: None known for the accounts; the lender has an exposure interest

What it says

Throughput-linked revenue for the last filed period implies materially lower volume than the management pack describes — roughly half.

Standing

High standing for what it records, but it records a historic period and a financial proxy, not present physical capability.

S3

Berth allocation and clearance records from an adjacent operator

Independent third-party record

Interest: None known; the operator competes for berth windows

What it says

Shows fewer allocated windows than the contracted volume would require, but also shows two windows recorded under a different corporate name.

Standing

Genuinely independent and close to the operation, but incomplete: the record covers allocation, not utilisation.

How the conflict is worked

  1. 01

Separate the assertion from the measure

S1 asserts capability, S2 measures a financial proxy for historic volume, and S3 measures allocated access. Only S3 is close to the actual constraint. The apparent three-way conflict is partly a definitional conflict, and it is resolved as one only for the S1/S2 gap.

  2. 02

    Test independence, not source count

The lender summary within S2 restates figures supplied by the counterparty. That portion is not independent of S1 and is counted once. The filed accounts remain independent; the summary does not.

  3. 03

Pursue the anomaly rather than the average

The two windows recorded under a different corporate name in S3 are the most informative fact available. A clarification request is issued: is there an affiliate, a charter arrangement, or a shared facility, and on what terms is access held?

  4. 04

Disclose the interest and keep the source

S1 is retained and labelled interested rather than discarded. Its value is that it commits the counterparty to a position that can later be tested against performance.

Unresolved contradiction

Contracted volume requires access the counterparty may hold through an undisclosed arrangement rather than in its own right.

Disposition

Unresolved, material — escalated

If access is held through an affiliate or a third-party charter, capability depends on a relationship the client has not assessed and cannot enforce. If it is held directly, the contracted volume is plausible. Available evidence does not settle which.

What is issued

No conclusion is issued on first-quarter capability. The firm states that capability is unproven, identifies precisely what would prove it, and recommends that no volume commitment be given ahead of that proof.

Conditions attached

  • Written disclosure of every entity through which terminal access is held, with the instrument evidencing it.
  • Direct observation of a handling cycle at or above the contracted rate before commitment.
  • Access arrangements assigned or guaranteed to the client's benefit, or volume phased to independently evidenced capability.

Graded findings

Corporate existence, ownership and filing history
A — Established
Historic throughput materially below contracted volume
B — Corroborated
Physical handling capability at contracted volume
D — Contested
Basis on which berth access is held, and by which entity
U — Unknown, sought and not obtained

Referral, not characterisation

Whether the different corporate name indicates concealment is not a commercial finding. It is not asserted, and it is referred to the client's legal advisers with the underlying records rather than characterised by this firm.

This illustration compresses weeks of enquiry into one page. Real mandates produce more sources, more definitional conflict and, frequently, a longer list of things that stayed unknown. This illustration is entirely synthetic: no organisation named in it exists, and it evidences no past engagement. A fuller demonstration of the record format is the specimen decision record.

Governed evidence objects

E-01

VERIFIED

The statutory record confirms legal existence and current registered officers.

E-02

CLIENT_ASSERTION

A management-supplied capacity schedule describes facilities and throughput not independently tested in this illustration.

E-03

PUBLISHED_SOURCE

Two dated public records support prior institutional participation but do not establish present liquidity or performance capacity.

E-04

CONTRADICTION

A material operating claim conflicts with the documentary record available at the decision date.

E-05

INSUFFICIENT

Current cash-flow capacity remains unavailable in the synthetic evidence set.

Derived propositions

P-01

OBSERVATION

Legal identity is established, but operating capacity has not been established by that fact.

Lineage: E-01. Establishes identity; it does not establish operating capacity.

P-02

INFERENCE

Published records support an inference of prior institutional participation, not current ability to perform.

Lineage: E-03. Raises confidence in historical participation, not in current ability to perform.

P-03

UNRESOLVED

The capacity posture remains unresolved until the conflict and current cash-flow gap are disposed of.

Lineage: E-02, E-04, E-05. Requires resolution, a condition, or explicit acceptance before commitment.

Governed posture

Proceed only on conditions that independently establish the unresolved capacity question and dispose of the material contradiction.

What would change the view

The posture changes if authoritative current evidence establishes both performance capacity and a satisfactory explanation of the conflicting operating claim.

07Authority boundary

Mandate evidence is not publication authority

Existing intelligence is admitted and published through different gates

Approved GMI or external intelligence may enter an Alomarada mandate only as governed mandate evidence: provenance, rights, date, freshness, relevance and sufficiency are recorded. That admission does not authorise Alomarada publication. Publication from GMI or external intelligence requires a separate release event.

08Where the method stops

What this method is not

Not investigation, forensics or legal advice

The firm conducts commercial examination. Where a matter points to fraud, sanctions exposure, criminality or a question of law, it is referred to appropriately qualified advisers with the evidence intact.

Not surveillance or covert collection

Enquiry is conducted openly and lawfully, through documents, records, attributable conversations and observation. The firm does not obtain information by pretext or covert means.

Not a certification

A graded finding is a considered commercial judgement at a stated date. It is not an audit opinion, a rating, a warranty or a form of assurance regulated by any body.

Not automated

No finding reaches a client without named human review. Tooling structures evidence; it does not decide what deserves to be believed.

One-way research boundary

GMI can inform a mandate. A mandate does not become GMI.

GMI is a separate intelligence line associated with the Abraham of London intellectual and intelligence estate. It is not an Alomarada product and is not operated from this firm.

Where GMI material is relevant to a mandate, Alomarada consumes it as one evidence input among others, subject to the same provenance and sufficiency standards applied to every source.

Approved external intelligence may enter an Alomarada mandate with provenance, rights and sufficiency treatment. Existing intelligence is converted, not copied: each admission records class, date, rights and mandate relevance. Client mandate evidence does not flow into GMI, Abraham of London research, Alomarada public research or cross-mandate learning by default. Anonymisation alone is not release authority.
